NATIONAL PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY

What mood or feeling does this portrait express? How?

The image expresses the depression of the time this image was taken. War was around and he was going through some physical challenges as he had no legs to allow him to process in war successfully.

Describe the body language. How does this influence your opinion about the characters?

The body language of these boys are quite intimidating because in those days they did not know how to express themselves properly through photographs. Personally I am a fan of these type of images because it is slightly candid and has the olden day feel to them.

What is the subject’s relationship to the other elements of the photograph? Consider who the other people might be, the environment we find them in, or the objects within the scene?

In this image, it is clear to notice the loss of the woman's breasts and but in the background and all around her are religious cross's and things that reflect her faith in the Lord regardless on what goes wrong in her life.

How are portraits made in the studio different from those made in the natural world?

This image was taken in a home which is in-between a studio and the natural world. It gives off a homey effect but as well as an uncomfortable feeling because it looks as though the family has not enough money to have certain things.

From the image itself what can you deduce about the cultural or historical context in which this work was made?

This image reflects aboriginals living their life on a farm and being happy with it. It shows history in a way of the stereotypes that all aboriginals worked/lived on farms.

Study the photograph "War Hero by Peter Brew-Bevan" how would you rate the quality of portrait? do you like the photograph?

Study the picture of Julia Gillard pg 2.2, Do you think the Lighting used makes her portrait feel:
